September Unemployment in Springfield Lowest in Seven Years

The latest Local Area Unemployment Statistics report, from The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES), indicates that Springfield unemployment fell to a record low of 5.7 percent last month. A significant drop from both the 6.5 percent estimate reported this past August as well the 7.5 percent rate of September 2013. Last month’s unemployment figure represents the lowest September rate Springfield has experienced since 2007 when it was reported at 4.7 percent. Springfield’s rate remained below the Illinois average of 6.2 percent and on par with the U.S. average of 5.7 percent.

Planning work completed for Jackson Street corridor

Recently the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln’s Historic Preservation Fund awarded The Greater Springfield Chamber Foundation a $4,000 grant to develop planning concepts for a pedestrian corridor linking historic sites and properties from the Illinois State Capitol Complex to the Abraham Lincoln National Historic Site along Jackson Street in Springfield, Illinois.

Springfield maintains lowest cost of living in Illinois

Last week, The Council of Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) released the results for Q2 2014 Cost of Living Index. The study indicates that Springfield earned a Cost of Living Index score of 87.9, signifying living expenses 12.1 percent below the average U.S. city.
